The subscription details are towards the end of https://clippingmagic.com/pricing

Billing period is indicated on the plan (all are monthly on CM), you can cancel anytime, and no refunds.

While it's not spelled out in the details, when/if you cancel you can still use any remaining credits for the rest of your current billing period. Then at the end of the billing period your subscription is actually terminated, and any remaining credits forfeited.

This is a much deeper feature than it may at first seem like, at least if it's going to do a reasonably good job.

We have been struggling with the use-case - every time we've reached out to someone about what they want it for, it's always been something frivolous that they would not be willing to buy a subscription for.

This has lead us to conclude that it's a feature that a lot of people think of, and think they would like, but when push comes to shove, they don't actually really need/want it all that much.

I'd love to be wrong about that. A use case that could make sense is having a more "interesting" background to product photos, i.e. instead of just a white background, you can place the object in some interesting setting. That however is massively difficult to pull off without having it look like a cheesy green screen shot from a campy eighties movie - the lighting sources have to match, or it will inevitably just look "off".

We're definitely considering adding that. Thanks!

You can actually achieve the greying out of the mannequin by first removing the background but leaving the mannequin in, then downloading that result and uploading it, then marking the mannequin as background and setting the background color to something suitable.

AdminJacob N (Admin, Clipping Magic) commented  ·

We'd love to add that feature. Combining the images is quite tricky, both from a user-perspective, and from an implementation perspective, so it may be outside of the reasonable scope of the site.

Sorry, best workaround at present is to use the keyboard shortcut key B / Shift-B to cycle the background color. Doesn’t make it easier to remember, but at least it makes it quicker.

The live preview is an accurate preview of the result, so what you see is what you get.

I understand that it’s easy to miss that the service costs money before uploading an image, despite e.g. the “Pricing” link at the top.

That said, it really shouldn’t take “a lot of time” to cut your image – the whole point of the app is that it takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes to get the job done.

Most of the complaints we receive on this topic reference having spent 30+ minutes on an image. That means that either the algorithm completely broke down on that particular image (which certainly happens for a small percentage of images we receive), or the tool is being used incorrectly.

The most common way to abuse the tool is to use the red/green marks as highlighters. This confuses the algorithm to no end, and you basically have to painstakingly paint in the entire foreground, which sucks.

I understand that people want the tool…

I understand that people want miracles and that the tool should "just work" without having to spend even five seconds figuring out *how* to use it. And I also realize that the painstakingly produced little animations shown the first time you load up an image are all too easily ignored.

We will continue our efforts in making the tool easier to use. In the meantime, please review the tutorials: https://clippingmagic.com/tutorials/basics and the in-app Guided Tour.

@Linea: "Third party info" is not signing up for spam, it's standard web terms of service - all web analytics is done by third parties, and web analytics are a crucial component to improving the site.

The 3 year thing sounds like the Paypal / Amazon Payments token duration - that's just to not force you to go through re-signup all the time, you can cancel either on our site or on Paypal / Amazon any time - you are certainly not forced to stay subscribed!

AdminJacob N (Admin, Clipping Magic) commented  ·

PSA: subscriptions renew at midnight UTC ("London time" without daylight savings).

So depending on which timezone you're in, that may appear to be "earlier" to you than the date might imply (e.g. right now, midnight May 20th UTC is 5pm May 19th in California)

AdminJacob N (Admin, Clipping Magic) commented  ·

@Emma: I hear you. Maybe try signing up for the Standard plan (thereby getting 100 credits), then schedule a downgrade to the Light plan? In the first month you'd have 100 credits (timing that to when you have the corresponding need), then you can build up tokens slowly during the non-use period, with the rollover enabling you to have enough for the next burst?

And if a burst is ever larger than normal, you can do either an early renewal, or a one-month upgrade to Standard (upgrade followed by scheduled downgrade) - hopefully this would be rare.

AdminJacob N (Admin, Clipping Magic) commented  ·

To be clear: credits stay valid while you're subscribed. If your subscription ends (either by cancelling immediately, or cancelling at the end of the billing period), then any remaining credits are lost.

AdminJacob N (Admin, Clipping Magic) commented  ·

We are considering alternative models to subscriptions, but for the time being subscriptions is what we've got.

If you only need to do a few images, you can sign up for the Light plan and then set your subscription to automatically cancel at the end of the billing period: just go to your account page on CedarLakeVentures.com and click cancel on your subscription and you'll get the option of cancelling right away and cancelling at the end of the billing period.

Pixel-level image editing features are a tricky and slippery slope - there are tons of browser limitations, and significant risk of interface cluttering.

We are definitely considering doing something along those lines. The tricky part is that when you get to that level, chances are you'll be wanting something more than "just" background removal - you'll need a little image touchup here, a little editing there, and all of a sudden it's much more involved (and may not all be doable inside the browser). Information needs to be communicated, the QA process is much less straightforward, etc.

That said, there may be enough demand for "just" background removal that this still makes sense.

We're considering adding a background-image capability, but no timeline on that yet.

You can choose the background color by clicking the little drop-down checker button just to the left of the "refine"-button in the toolbar.

The little checker pattern means transparent, and your result should come out a PNG with the cutout indeed being cut out.

That sounds like an interesting idea - could you expand a little on it? Do you mean having some stock art (e.g. "a table") on which you could place the cut out item? Or do you mean something else? Thanks!

You can now set the background color. No photo background yet.

Yes, this would be a nice feature, we're certainly considering adding it.

I'm not entirely clear on what you mean here - did you get a chance to review the tutorial? http://clippingmagic.com/tutorials/basics

Adding the UI and cognitive complexity of an additional mode of usage would be prohibitive - just put some red marks on the colors you don't want?!

You mean to avoid having to put a red mark in each of the little "holes" in the tree / bush?

We've been discussing that, and it's definitely a possibility. We've been a bit reluctant to add another color (there's enough complexity to the interface as is), but it may be worth it.
